NBLSA Alumni Spotlight (Entertainment Law) - Attorney Ricky Anderson

Attorney Ricky Anderson is the managing partner of Anderson & Smith, where he practices entertainment law. Though he grew up in a small African-American community in Benton Harbor, Michigan, he became one of the biggest names in the entertainment law industry. His clients include many of the greatest entertainers in their fields, namely: comedian-actors, such as Steve Harvey, Mo'Nique, and Rickey Smiley; gospel greats, such as Yolanda Adams and Mary Mary; award-winning actors, such as Isaiah Washington; and sports legends, including, Cynthia Cooper and Eddie Robinson. Attorney Anderson became the first attorney of record who was named at the Academy Awards®, which took place during Mo'Nique's acceptance speech when she won her first Oscar® for her performance in "Precious." Attorney Anderson has also received numerous awards from organizations, including: the National Bar Association, Grammy Governors, and the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association.
Although Attorney Anderson has received international recognition, he is a firm believer in giving back to his community. Along with offering scholarships to law students, Attorney Anderson has also been an adjunct law professor for nearly 20 years. He teaches at his alma mater, Thurgood Marshall School of Law, which was created as a result of the well-known Supreme Court case, Sweatt v. Painter.
